| Okoboji Open Report |
| Bartholomew wins Open, 4 way for first in Reserve! |
| April 21, 2013 |
The 2013 Okoboji Open kicked off on Friday afternoon with a simultaneous exhibition by International Master John Bartholomew, which saw the personable chess teacher and aspiring grandmaster from Minneapolis score 11 wins out of 12 games with Southwest Minnesota Chess president Sam Smith notching the sole blemish on Bartholomew’s record when his Budapest Defense gained a draw offer from the IM. When the simul ended, the tournament began with the first round of the three day open and reserve schedules and it soon became apparent that this tournament was going to be hotly contested with no one safe from being on the wrong end of an upset. In the reserve section, Smith couldn’t capitalize on his IM draw and found himself on the wrong end of a 325 point upset at the hands of JP Wagle while pre-teen Nastassja Matus scored a 341 point upset of perennial reserve prize winner Bill Broich. In the open section, NM Okechukwu Iwu scored a relatively easy victory, three time Iowa champion and life master Tim McEntee managed to convert a drawn endgame against 2012 Jackson Open champion Eric Bell, but 2011 Iowa champion Bob Keating caught a 290 point upset bug at the hands of David Floeder and re-entered into the two day section. On Saturday morning, the two day section kicked off while the three day section continued and an Okoboji record 62 players were matching wits on Saturday morning, with each game having its own large table in the spacious Bay Hill room of the host facility Arrowwood Resort. The increase in tournament attendance was aided in large part by the use of Dr. Sisira Amarasinghe's excellent chess registration website www.onlineregistration.cc. The two day open section was packed with top level players with IM Bartholomew being joined by FM Kevin Wasiluk, the youngest ever USCF master in history in 10 year old FM Awonder Liang, 14 year old master Andrew Tang, master Prasantha Amarasinghe, as well as the re-entered Keating and former master James Ellis. There were no upsets in the Open’s two day section opening round or the Saturday morning round two of the three day section, but the reserve section wasn’t immune to carnage as the two day section began with defending champion John Flores being knocked off by unrated Nathaniel Arnold in the opening round. |

*****************Press Release*****************
Since its debut in January of 2007 at the Okoboji Winter Games, The Okoboji Open Chess Tournament has been the largest and strongest chess competition in the northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota region. Now entering its seventh year (and fifth year of being held in April), The Okoboji Open has seen a number of formidable players compete for its large prize fund. USCF Master Mitch Weiss, a six -time Iowa state champion, USCF Master Tim McEntee, a three -time Iowa state champion, International Master John Bartholomew and USCF Master Matt Dahl (both former National High School Champions from Minnesota), and of course 2-time US Chess Champion and recent inductee into the Chess Hall of Fame, International Grandmaster Alex Yermolinsky. And that list doesn't even include Minnesota's young chess phenom Andrew Tang, three-time Iowa High School Champion Matt Anzis, and Iowa state champion Robert Keating. These strong players and many others have guaranteed that the ultimate winners of trophies and prize money at Okoboji will have indeed been tested and found worthy. This year's competition, however, will have a player unlike any ever seen in previous years.
This competitor has won a World Championship for chess players under 8 years of age. He holds the records for youngest player to ever defeat an Expert, International Master, and International Grandmaster in tournament play. And he is the youngest person in the world to ever become a chess master. He did this at the age of 9 years; by contrast, Bobby Fischer became a master at the age of 13. He already has a Wikipedia page on the internet in addition to other websites detailing his impressive chess accomplishments. His name is Awonder Liang, and he and his brother Adream have just registered to play in the 2013 Okoboji Open. These two brothers from Madison, Wisconsin promise to add excitement and drama to what was already looking to be another fierce competition.
The 2013 Okoboji Open will be held at Arrowwood Resort in Okoboji, Iowa on the weekend of April 19th with play in two sections, Open and Reserve. Players can choose between 2 or 3-day schedules and pre-register by mail or online. There is also a reduced rate for hotel rooms for players at Arrowwood Resort (mention chess tournament rate) through April 12th. Details are available on the following websites: www.centraliowachess.com and www.iowachess.org. Questions should be directed to tournament organizer Jodene Kruse at jodene77©yahoo.com.

Awonder Liang, the USCF's youngest ever master has just registered for the 2 day section of the 2013 Okoboji Open along with his brother Adream. This will be the first Iowa appearance since 2008 for the record setting FIDE Master who won the 2011 World Under 8 year old chess championship. You can read about some of Liang's exploits by clicking here.
The tournament host Arrowwod Resort has lowered the chess rate to $71 and has extended the deadline to April 12th. You can reserve your room at this low rate by calling the Resort at 712-560-0557. If anyone from the central Iowa area needs a ride to the tournament or is looking to share a room, please contact me at anzis@prodigy.net.
This year's tournament has an increased prize fund and the Reserve section will be adding a 3-day section in addition to the traditional 2-day section. International Master John Bartholomew will be playing and also giving a simul on Friday night. Bartholomew’s commitment at Okoboji gives Iowa's premiere chess tournament an IM or stronger player for the 5th consecutive year.
If you haven't played at Okoboji, get yourself an early Christmas present and play in the best playing conditions in Iowa with a 'pin-drop' quiet playing hall, enough room for all the participants to have their own table, and games posted to the web after each round.

Players from four states traveled to set a new record attendance of twenty-six (26) at the 6th Annual Jackson Open. The states represented in the new milestone were: Minnesota 15; Iowa 6; South Dakota 4; and Montana 1. See Wall Chart for all six events.
One third of the Minnesota group hailed from Southern Minnesota; Mankato 2; Mountain Lake 1; Worthington 1; and Jackson 1. But for Douglas Hansen, Montana, Dane Zagar would have represented the player travelling the furthest - Duluth. The six players from Iowa came from: Sibley 1; Algona 2; and three from central Iowa. The remaining four players came from South Dakota.
Winning the 6th edition of the Jackson Open was Eric Bell with a perfect score of 4.0. Tied for second and third were Jackson Wahl and Jaleb Jay with 3.5. Final standings and prizes awarded can be found Jackson Open Results. The prize fund of $700 was guaranteed and $725 was awarded with the addition of $25 for U1200.
Sam Smith, organizer, made a special presentation to John Flores by unveiling the Flores Cup. The trophy had a plate read: "This trophy carries the names of the winners of the Jackson Open Chess Tournament and is named in honor of John B. Flores in recognition of his lifetime of service to the chess community August 18, 2012." The "Cup" had plates for the winners of the first five tourneys: 2006-Ron Deike/Michael Wangen; 2008-Christopher Gill; 2009-William Dobbs; 2010-William Dobbs; and 2011-John Flores. This year's winner to be added: 2012-Eric Bell with an additional 24 plates, enough space for a total of 30 champs.

The recent addition of a new sponsor has enabled us to guarantee the entire prize fund for the 6th Annual Jackson Open. The prize fund has increased to $700. Furthermore, the entire amount is being guaranteed!
Accordingly, chess players rated under 2000 are sought to dethrone John Flores as defending champion. This is not some lame attempt to boast, but rather, an invitation to join a great bunch of people for some good chess at a scenic area on the border of Minnesota and Iowa. Go the the Chamber of Commerce link to view the many attractions Jackson has to offer.
You may view complete details by going to the events calendar or clicking 6th Annual Jackson Open.
